Lori Ann Driver, LMSW

One of the things I most enjoy about my career is continuing to learn. As I began my independent practice I had over ten years of intensive psychodynamic supervision. Then I began to train in approaches to treating psychological trauma. What do I mean by trauma? There are basically two types: one is shock trauma which results from a discrete event like a car accident or an assault. The other type is developmental or complex trauma which happens in the context of relationships.  During the course of our early lives the people we most depend on may consistently fail to attune, nurture, or provide safety, and as a result we must adapt as best we can. Our adaptations may then become survival strategies that are often central as we form our basic sense of ourselves—our identities.  We tend to carry these strategies and identifications into adult life even though in certain ways they may no longer serve us. I can support you in exploring and appreciating the adaptations and strategies you may have developed long ago, and I can also support your discovery of a new freedom to better connect with yourself and redirect the strategies that are no longer useful to you.

I’ve trained extensively in some of my field’s cutting edge models for working with shock and developmental trauma, including Somatic Experiencing (SE), Somatic Resilience and Regulation (SRR), and the Neuro Affective Relational Model (NARM). I have been a training assistant in Somatic Experiencing and I’ve achieved the highest level of certification as a NARM Master Practitioner. I’ve found each of these approaches useful with a wide variety of people.  Framing my client’s struggles with a shock and/or developmental lens has enhanced the depth of my work whether with young adults transitioning to independence, adults with depression and anxiety, couples and older adults. I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna.
